Best BJJ Gis for Beginners [current_year] – Your Ultimate Guide

If you’re a BJJ beginner, buying your first, or perhaps second Gi is quite exciting, but can also be a bit overwhelming! We know, because we’ve been there. With all these brands, colors, material type and choices, it can be quite hard for you to decide which one is the best for you to buy. To help you we have written a full review on the best BJJ Gis for beginners and also provide a guide on what you should be looking out for for your new Gi.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gi and No-Gi, have one very notable difference between them. Gi Jiu-Jitsu allows you to grapple your opponent using traditional Gi, as in you’ll be able to grab their clothes during combat. As you could have guessed from the name, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t have the traditional Gi, and instead of that, you have to wear a rash guard, t-shirt, or tank tops for your upper body paired with shorts or spats for the lower body.

Check our our Beginner BJJ Gi review below and find the most suitable for your new found passion.

Best Beginner BJJ Gi Buying Guide

So, you’re planning/you’ve started to train in Gi Jiu-Jitsu. The Gi is one of the biggest parts of the combat, so you’re going to be wanting something suitable, something comfortable, practical, and convenient. Obviously, since you’re a beginner, you might not have a clue about that. Don’t fret! We’ve made this comprehensive guide to give you a clear idea about the apt attire for Gi.

Importance of Wearing a Gi

To start with, what’s a Gi? It’s the heavily stitched, fully cotton uniform that must be worn during training and competing. There’s a huge range of brands offering these uniforms in different qualities, colors, and patterns. A Gi has three basic sections: 1. The coat or jacket, 2. The drawstring pants, and 3. The belt.

The pants will be quite loose and shorter than your typical leggings, only falling at the ankles. The purpose is to offer complete mobility, speed, and comfort. The belt shows off the person’s rank, and it’s perhaps the most used component in all forms of martial arts combined. The system has five levels designated by five colors; starting from rookie all the way to master, the list goes as white, blue, purple, brown, and the most coveted – black belt.

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is actually super interesting if you think about the techniques. The Gi eliminates the elements of speed and strength, making the competitors completely focus on technique and skills. Professional Gi Jiu-Jitsu warriors have mastered the art of the Gi to gain victory over their rivals.

So, to sum it up, your Gi or uniform is one of the most important parts of your training.

Now that we’ve talked about the importance let’s move on to what you have been reading on for – the top 10 Jiu Jitsu Gi for beginners. We tried and tested many models available in the market and decided on these. They’re guaranteed to meet anyone’s expectations.

Beginners will and have loved this comfortable, lightweight, and worth the money Gi from Gold BJJ. The Aeroweave Gi feels soft on the skin, provides breathability on days when you’re sweating like crazy and will have a significantly longer life.

When starting off, you’re not going to be in most control, so to keep you agile, a lightweight gi is suitable. The branding on these isn’t excessive to make you feel like a trainee and less of a walking advertisement. The 10OZ ripstop pants are an added benefit at this point. Gold BJJ promises to replace or refund your product if you’re unhappy with it, but chances are thin you’ll feel that way.

Pros:

  • Perfect blend of quality and value
  • Maximum comfort
  • Convincing warranty
  • Four nice colors with a minimalistic design

Cons:

  • Not the cheapest on the list

The lightweight materials fight against the buildup of fungal and bacterial infections alongside drying sweat significantly faster. We’ll still inspect everything to make sure you end up with a great Gi. The Fuji All-Around Gi has won many awards for the build and is an industry favorite.

It’s not the most lightweight thing you’ll find in the market, but that only means it has added points on the durability section. The second version of the Venum BJJ Contender Gi, the Venum Contender 2.0, is significantly more comfortable and durable than its predecessor.

The jacket is completely made of pearl weave cotton, perfectly hitting the balance between lightweight and sturdiness as well as stronger seams. EVA foam reinforced collar more resistance to bottlenecks while leaving space for a counter-attack. The pants are 100% cotton and contain extra stitching inside the leg region and ankle cuffs. However, it doesn’t come with a belt, so make sure to get one separately. There’s also a selection of basic colors to choose from. Customers have noted that it does tend to shrink a slight amount on the first wash, but it’s definitely not a recurring event. The size chart is quite accurate, and it’s true to fit.

Pros:

  • Well-built
  • Flexible
  • Foam collar is very nicely constructed
  • Five colors to select from

Cons:

Perfect for beginners and advanced practitioners alike, the Hayabusa Leightweight Jiu-Jitsu Gi is a top-notch BJJ Gi made to deliver incredible quality and comfort.

Constructed with pearl weave cotton, the craftsmanship on these Gis is truly impressive. They’re made for the wear and tear, for the everyday rugged practice sessions that many other Gis would hardly survive, and they’re very snug and airy at the same time. The fabric offers great maneuverability, so you’re quick on your feet. In our opinion, the design is also noteworthy – the tie closure and the overall build has more of a timeless look to it. Keep away unwanted tears with the 8OZ rip shot pants. The entire gi has reinforced stitching for added durability, and the fabric is pre-treated to prevent color fading. We would like to add that the fitting on these is remarkable, sure to never disappoint.

Pros:

  • Modern design
  • Long-lasting
  • Pearl weave stitching feels light on the skin
  • Four nice colors to pick from

Cons:

Hawk BJJ Gi

This one probably wouldn’t have made the cut had we been listing the top BJJ gi available in the market, but it deserves the spot in the rookie list. It’s definitely one of the cheapest options out there that you’ll want to start with. With time, you will be able to upgrade as per your growing demands. This one’s a great starter option.

The designs are very simple, and it comes it a bunch of different colors. The preshrunk pearl weave fabric is lightweight enough to provide comfort during those long hours of rigorous training. Pros:

  • Multiple sizes and colors to choose from
  • Minimalistic design
  • Anti-microbial

Cons:

  • Fabric quality is average at best

If we’re talking about excellent starter Gis, the Your Jiu Jitsu Gi needs to be mentioned for the great value of money it offers. An interesting fact about the brand that might incline you toward it: these are designed by a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has over 50 years of experience!

The Gi is single weaved and is nice and comfortable. You could even customize these according to your preference. The gi doesn’t have any extra labels because the company says they don’t want you to be a “free billboard advertisement.” We think that’s a really nice step. Besides that, the build is incredible for the price tag. Customers can vouch for the durability, and they say it’s lasted them a few years before being needed to be retired. The fabric is preshrunk for continued better fitting throughout your use.

Pros:

  • Customizable
  • Remarkable performance

This premium BJJ gi is a high-end addition to the list, and it’s one for the modern combaters. Durable yet lightweight, this comfortable Calavera Gi is a super kimono Gi even at the extended price range.

The gold weave jacket is super strong and soft at the same time. It also has a special sugar-skull rash-guard neck liner that will make you feel the difference the moment you put it on (and it looks cooler!). The fabric itself has been specially treated, which means it’s going to stay drier for longer. On top of that, it’s also going to fight bad odor and stop the growth of microbes as a result of sweat. You’ll see that Sanabul is a fan-favorite when it comes to BJJ Gi, and even more so for the beginners. The company really takes care of the fitting. Cruise through your intense training sessions with this lightweight, airy Gi that can be counted as one of the best training Gis there are.

The heavy-duty drawstring will stay strong the whole day, so forget pausing mid-class to tighten the string. The fabric is preshrunk and promised to have less than 2% of shrinkage, and we’re happy that it delivered to the promise. • Offers excellent fitting for all sizes

Cons:

  • Quite pricey for a training Gi

Best Beginner’s Gi Buying Guide

Before you make the purchase, make a list of everything you want your Gi to be. Also, keep in mind the most basic things that go into making a good, if not great, gi.

  1. Weave: There are three types of weaves, mainly. The cheapest and most common one would be the “single-weave.” It usually has a reasonable (lower) price point, but it affects their resilience. This can be a good choice for a beginner because they can upgrade later on. It’s also better for warm climates as they’re less restricting. The double weave Gi is stronger, more durable. These do tend to cost more, but if you’re considering utility, they’re better for the long run and are much more efficient. The added quality also provides improved comfort. For the ones who can’t make the pick between the aforementioned two, the Gold Weave fits the bill. It tries to combine the pros of the single and double weave to make the fabric more durable and lightweight together. We’d say this is for the more experienced practitioners who thrive for the rolls. However, if you have some cash to splurge, you could try this premium-grade weave. Some brands even have their own kind of weaves to add a more personalized touch.
  2. Collar (also called Lapel) Fill: Cotton or rubber is the mostly used BJJ Gi collar material, with the latter being more popular. Contrary to that, experienced combaters comment that the cotton ones are more comfortable, while the rubber collars increase the chances of collar choke. Different rubber bands have different qualities. Their popularity can be accounted for their bacteria growth hindering properties in comparison to the cotton collars.
  3. Color: The traditional Gis are white, but BJJ has seen a number of new colors being added to the roster – like black or blue. If your dream is to take on the IBJJF ((International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation) one day, choose black, blue, or white as they’re all officially approved. If you’re doing simple training, pick out whichever you want. Don’t go wild and choose an overly flashy one, though. Some teachers won’t allow that.
  4. Price: A typical Gi can cost anywhere from $40-$400. Of course, you won’t have to give up an arm and a leg to afford a decent gi, so it’s better if you compare the proposed value to the cost. However, we would like to recommend staying around the $100 margin, as that’s where you’ll find some functional gis. You could go lower, but the quality would degrade substantially.

Best BJJ Gi for Beginners – Conclusion

It’s time to announce the winner of the “Best BJJ GI for Beginners,” and we’re thrilled to announce that the title goes to the Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi. It’s everything you would want in a Gi while staying well within the affordable range. The construction, color selection, lifetime, all combine to form a Gi that you’ll be glad to have your training partner. It’s noteworthy that all Gis mentioned on the guide are IBJFF certified. Finding the perfect uniform is anything but easy, so we hope we made it a little bit easier for you to make the final choice.

Tatami Zero G V4 BJJ Gi Review [2022]

Tatami Zero G V4 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi

Tatami Zero G V4 Review [current_year]: Is this BJJ Gi worth your money?

Tatami is the perfect brand for all beginner BJJ fighters. They sell their gear at a very affordable price. One of their best and latest gear is the Tatami Zero G V4 BJJ Gi.

You may think that it would lack in quality, or compromise durability or something. But Tatami does not do that with their gis. Tatami started with the idea of creating high-quality gear affordable for beginners and students of BJJ. So what would be the point of starting the brand if they could not manufacture high-quality products at a budget-friendly price?

Even though the Tatami Zero G V4 is their latest BJJ gi, is it good enough for the competition? In this review, we will find that out.

Table of Contents

Tatami Zero G V4 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi

A Short Introduction of Tatami

Gareth Dummer first imagined this brand. The idea came to his mind when his students were having trouble affording high-quality Jiu-Jitsu gears. In 2009, Gareth Dummer founded Tatami with Lee Jones.

Together they have been working and researching for manufacturing high-quality BJJ gear at a budget-friendly price. Their target market is BJJ students and beginners.

But anyone can use their product if they want. Some of their BJJ gear like the Tatami Zero G V4 gi is IBJJF approved. They can wear it to international competitions if they want to.

From this small introduction of the brand, we can easily understand how the brand aims to maintain high-quality standards in its products.

The Tatami Zero G V4 Gi Review [current_year]

The Tatami Zero G V4 gi is Tatami’s most unique gi yet. It is durable, reliable, sized to be a perfect fit and the design is iconic.

The Tatami Zero G V4 gi is perfected by learning from the flaws of its previous versions. Moreover, it is designed and tested in association with some famous BJJ fighters.

The gi jacket is lightweight. It is crafted with Pearl Weave cotton.

Pearl weave cotton is the most lightweight fabric approved by IBJJF. So this is the most lightweight gi you can get for an IBJJF competition fight. It is also durable and comfortable. The pants are made of twill cotton fabric. They are both comfortable.

The design of the gi is very unique. It features Tatami branding on both shoulders.

Why don’t we get a little more technical with the Tatami Zero G V4 gi’s features? It will help us understand it better.

Features of The Tatami Zero G V4 Gi

Perhaps the best feature of this Tatami Zero G V4 gi would be its affordability. There are more. But we will keep our focus on material, quality, sizing, design, comfort, and price of the gi.

Material

The material used in this gi is pearl weave cotton. It is rated 475 gsm. The jacket is only constructed with this material. The pants are constructed with 9oz twill weave cotton.

Both of these are good choices for making a lightweight and durable gi. The Tatami Zero G V4 gi has them both.

Alo this material makes it very comfortable to wear, even in hot weather.

The jacket has a nice texture to it. Even though it is a budget gi, you will find some premium feel into it.

Quality

The quality of the Tatami Zero G V4 gi is top-notch. Tatami did demonstrate their will of providing the highest quality gear to the BJJ fighters with this gi.

The jacket is constructed with pearl weave cotton. It is the most lightweight fabric approved by the IBJJF. The pants are made of twill weave cotton. Both of them are really good materials and they are very durable.

The pants have a rope drawstring closure, which will make them stay in place throughout the fight.

The design is very attractive. It has an iconic design with the Tatami logo on both shoulders.

So judging by its overall properties, the Tatami Zero G V4 gi has no lack of quality in it.

Sizing

The Tatami Zero G V4 Gi is designed specially to fit perfectly across all sizes. The available sizes for this gi are from A1 to A5. There are also in-between sizes available from A1 to A3.

You will not have trouble finding the right size of this gi. Just look up your body measurement in Tatami’s Zero-G gi sizing chart.

However, there is one problem. The Tatami Zero G V4 Gi is not made with pre-shrunk materials. So don’t be surprised if the gi does not fit you after the first wash.

According to Tatami, you should expect at least 7% shrinkage in all dimensions for the gi.

Is it acceptable? We would say yes. They are manufacturing high-quality BJJ gi at a budget-friendly price. So there had to be something to compromise and this shrinking was that compromise.

You can easily counter it by a chain a bigger size gi. After washing, that gi will shrink and fit into your size. We would suggest you buy one size bigger, even if in-between sizes are available.

So choose one size bigger and you will have no issue with the shrinkage.

Design

The design of this gi is very attractive, It is IBJJF approved. The gi is available in two colors. Black and white. Both of them have the same visuals.

The visual elements are two Tatami logos on both shoulders. That creates an iconic look.

Then there is a small Tatami logo in the back.

There is one Zero-G branding in the right hip and one Tatami branding in the left thigh. Overall, it creates a minimal, yet iconic design.

The cut of the jacket is square. This creates a baggy feeling, which is kind of not appreciated. So that is another compromise of this budget-friendly gi.

Comfort

We think that the material of the Tatami Zero G V4 Gi says enough about its comfort. The jacket is made using pearl weave cotton. It is lightweight and super breathable. So, on the top side, you will have no discomfort. Not even in hot summer and intense fighting sessions.

The pants are made with twill cotton fabric. It is slightly less breathable than the jacket’s pearl cotton fabric. But it delivers good comfort.

Both the jacket and pants of this gi are cotton. So, you will not feel any lack of comfort. However, it will get soaked up in your sweat and create a wet towel feeling. We all know how irritating that is.

Price

The price of this Tatami Zero G V4 Gi is less than $150. It is more near the $100 range, just a little above.

For such a price point, you are getting a high-quality pearl weave jacket and durable twill cotton pants. So, we would say that it is a very good deal. All you need to do is pick the right size for your body.

So that is our technical analysis on the features of the Tatami Zero G V4 Gi. We must say, that is a lot of good stuff for such an affordable price. Tatami did deliver what they promised. All you need to do is keep some considerations in mind.

For this Tatami Zero G V4 Gi, that would be the shrinkage of the gi. According to their official statement, it will shrink up to 7%. So you should pick one size bigger when buying the Tatami Zero G V4 Gi.

Pros

  • Pearl weave cotton
  • IBJJF approved
  • Includes a Tatami carrying bag
  • Lightweight and durable jacket
  • Iconic design
  • Affordable price

Cons

  • No belt included
  • The gi will shrink up to 7%

Tatami Zero G V4 Gi Review [current_year] Conclusion

So that was our Tatami Zero G V4 Gi review. Is it good enough? Yes. Everything about this gi is solid. It is lightweight, durable, and comfortable. It can also last for years.

Just the fabric will shrink. So, keep that in mind and choose one size bigger.

We hope our review was helpful!

What should you consider before buying?

Before you go out and buy a Judo gi, you should keep a few things in mind. You should also know that Judo is much different from BJJ, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is a grapple-based form of martial arts. Here are the key points you should keep in mind before making your purchase.

Size

Just like any other attire, a Judo Gi needs to fit you perfectly. So you better go for a size that will suit you. It’s incredibly important for you to be able to move freely and flexibly in a Judo Gi. Whether you’re going for a Uchimata grab or a Kesa Getame Grapple, you want your legs to move fast.

If you get a tight or a loose fitted one, you’re going to struggle in a match. And since you’re a beginner, you might even get discouraged. Your weight and height play an important part while choosing your judo Gi.

Durability and Thickness

Since you’re a beginner, you would probably want to get a Judo gi that will likely last a couple of years. As a beginner, you would want to move to a professional Gi further down the road. You can get two types of thicknesses when it comes to Judo Gis. They are either thick on thin. The beginners should opt for the thinner Gis that performs well in all-weather situations. If you’re planning a more competitive route, go for the thicker ones.

Comfort

Every gear should come with maximum comfort. No matter how pricey or premium the materials are, if they are uncomfortable to wear, you won’t like it. Try it on and see if you can move freely. That should do the trick.

Color

The next thing to consider before buying your gi is the color. Don’t go and buy a BJJ gi. For judo, you can only wear white or blue colored Gis. But if you want a gi just for training sessions, you can opt for other colors too.

Collar and Sleeve Size

Typically, for a Judo gi, you need to opt for the thick-collared ones. Pro-tip, your judge will pretty much disqualify you if he finds out you’re wearing a BJJ gi for a Judo match. So get a gi that will allow you to grab on to your opponent in a match. A double weave is a preferable way to go when it comes to Judi Gis.

If you’re unsure about what type of stitching your gi came with, check for the double stitching. If there’s a second layer of stitching, you can rest assured that you got a good gi.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s dive into the best Judo Gis for beginners. We’ve gathered the top-rated Gis on the market for your convenience. Each of them has its unique quirks and features. So pick out the one that will suit your needs perfectly.

7 Best Judo Gis for Beginners [current_year]

Mizuno Yusho Japan Judo Gi

Mizuno Yusho Japan Judo Gi

Check Price on Amazon

The first Judo gi on our list is from Mizuno. If you’re living in Japan, there’s a chance that you’re already familiar with this brand. The Japanese love products from Mizuno. The quality and fine details their gear comes with are top-notch. The Mizuno gi featured on our list is no exception.

You’ll get this one in two different colors, the traditional blue, and white. You will also find it in up to 5 different sizes too. So if you want to start practicing Judo with your teenager, you can both get matching Gis. The Yusho from Mizuno is one of their best sellers. This gi has become the most popular judo gi around japan, and gradually, around the world too.

The stitching on the gi is IJF approved so you don’t have to worry about breaking rules with your gi. The hi is manufactured with the IJF regulations kept in mind. The seams, both reverse, and back are top-class. The knee part is double-stitched. The shoulders are reinforced with extra padding to keep you from getting hurt.

Moving on to the pants, you wouldn’t get drawstrings anywhere else at this price point. What’s more amazing is that the incredibly low shrinkage. So you won’t have to worry about it shrinking and gradually becoming unwearable.

Product Benefits:

  • Signature Runbird-stitching on the shoulders
  • Low shrinkage rate
  • Seams and stitches are IJF approved
  • Highly durable fabric

So welcome to our Gameness Air Gi review.

About Gameness

Gameness has been a reputed MMA sports gear brand. They manufacture various types of MMA gears. They also have sports apparel in their collection.

Their r gi collections are their main attraction. They have the tear-proof collection, fashion collection, and lastly the air collection. The air collection is their top-selling gi product.

The brand has been a loyal friend of all MMA fighters. They regularly publish blogs and articles related to BJJ and MMA on their website. Beginners can gain lots of insight about fighting gear from there.

That is enough introduction of the brand. Now let us look at the Gameness Air Gi.

The Gameness Air BJJ Gi Review [current_year]

The Gameness Air Gi is very fresh-looking. It has a simple and plain design with minimal branding of Gameness. If you are looking for something fresh to wear in your training, then this one should be it.

It is deemed as the most lightweight gi in MMA. Lightweight gis is well appreciated. Especially during the hot summer. Because of its lightweight, it will be less tiring for fighters to train in these.

You may think that the lightweight design of this Gameness Air Gi compromises its durability. But no. This gi is lightweight and durable at the same time. How is that possible? With the latest fabric processing methods.

So let us do a technical analysis of Gameness Air Gi’s features. That way we will understand this gi better.

Features of The Gameness Air Gi

The most unique feature of this gi is its weight. It only weighs only 1.336kg (2.9453lbs). But there are other features to be explored. We will be reviewing Gameness Air Gi’s build material, quality, sizing, design, comfort, and price.

Material

The material used in making this lightweight gi jacket is Comb Weave fabric. It is rated 350 gr/m2. This is the latest type of weave fabric used in constructing BJJ gis. It is lightweight and durable.

However, the gi will get sweaty with this type of fabric. So long training and fighting sessions might be an issue here.

The pants are made with a different type of fabric. It is made with a special cotton and poly blend ripstop fabric. This fabric is also lightweight and durable. Together they make the Gameness Air Gi lightweight and durable enough to handle all the stress in a BJJ fight.

Quality

If you take a look at this Gameness Air Gi’s price, which is less than $100, you may think that it lacks quality. But it does not. Surprisingly, this gi has a great price-quality ratio.

The quality is beyond your expectations. It can last for years.

The gi is reinforced in the main stress points. The knees, chest, and other parts. They are reinforced with seamless stitching. So no need to worry about itchy feelings.

The jacket collar is a rubberized foam and it is wrapped with ripstop fabric.

The pants use a draw-string for tightening.

However, the fabric may still tear in less stress than other regular gis. The lightweight fabric may be durable but it is not as durable as the regular cotton fabrics.

Sizing

The sizing of the Gameness Air Gi is perfect. It fits perfectly. The available sizes are from A0 to A6. There are no in-between sizes. So you might have struggled in finding the perfect fit for you.

The fabric is pre-shrunk. But it will shrink a little after you wash them. So if you are stuck in an in-between situation, choose the larger size. After a few washes, it will fit perfectly on your body.

Design

The design of this Gameness Air Gi is minimal. There is no such fancy style to it. It is acceptable for the price of less than $100.

The Gameness Air Gi is available in three colors/ White, black and blue. There is a “Gameness” writing printed on the right shoulder. A Gameness logo is printed in red on the left shoulder. The pants also have the red Gameness logo on their right upper thigh. These are the only three visual elements of this Gameness Air Gi.

The patches and reinforcements of the gi are done with a dual needle stitching system. This way, the joints stay more secure and strong. The pants come with a four-loop drawstring closure design. We would recommend they add a few more loops for the drawstring.

Using the price, we would say that the design is spot on. It is fresh-looking and straightforward. More importantly, it does not look too cheap. You can even fit the entire gi with its pants in a compact space.

Comfort

Comfort is where this Gameness Air Gi shines. It is all about comfort because it is marketed as the most lightweight BJJ gi.

It is made with comb-weave fabric. It is super comfortable on the skin and it is soft. The fact that it is lightweight, makes it the perfect choice for summer and other hot weather.

But as it is a cotton fabric, it will soak your sweat and become wet. This will make the fighter uncomfortable.

The same can be said for the pants. It is made with a cotton-poly blend ripstop fabric. This makes it comfortable but when sweaty, it becomes irritating.

So we are not sure what to say about its comfortability. But we will conclude this part by saying that it will give you maximum comfort until it becomes wet with your sweat

Price

The price of this Gameness Air Gi is less than $100. This makes it super affordable. You can get two of these at the price of a regular BJJ gi.

These Gameness Air Gis are IBJJF approved, which makes them more appealing. Because you can wear them and fight in international BJJ tournaments.

So far less than $100, you are getting the world’s most lightweight gi, which is approved by BJJ and which is also tear-resistant. We would say that the price is less than the gi’s actual value. So don’t wait and grab one of these Gameness Air Gis right now.

Pros

  • The most lightweight gi
  • Breathable fabric
  • Durable and ng lasting gi
  • Rope drawstring for pants
  • Available in white, black and blue
  • Fresh looking design
  • Compact storing

Cons

  • Less visual elements in exterior design
  • Only four hooks
  • The belt is not included
  • No in-between sizes

Check Price on Amazon

Comparing the number of pros with the number of cons, the Gameness Air Gi is far better than we had expected.

Conclusion

The Gameness Air Gi is the world’s most lightweight gi. It has a very comfortable feeling and sense of touch. This can serve as a great fighting gi for hot summers. The only downsides are that it is not made of quick-drying fabric and the fabric cannot handle stress as much as the regular cotton fabric does.

But for less than $100, it is a very good choice for beginners and all BJJ fighters.

Why is a BJJ mouthguard important?

Playing any kind of sport or martial arts requires proper safety. Training in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regularly for a long period of time definitely does give you a huge improvement in your tactical and technical progress but it often does make you realize that you are in fact in need of some protective gear.

The concerning fact about most martial arts involving the grappling technique like Jiu-Jitsu, for example, makes almost all of our body susceptible to injury, and to protect ourselves from that we need proper protective gear.

Our mouths are one of the most vital parts of our body, hence it needs to be protected from any kind of injury that may come from BJJ. Therefore, what we need is a reliable, comfortable, and durable mouthguard to protect our mouth from any injury or serious accidents, making it that much of an important step to sit down and select a good one, especially if you’re playing professionally as a competitor.

If you’re also looking for some protection around the groin, check out our review of the groin cups.

How to choose a proper BJJ mouthguard

There are a few things that need you to take into consideration while purchasing a mouthguard for yourself. No one wants a defective or uncomfortable piece of gear that’s supposed to be protecting you.

To get things started, we need to first understand a few things about mouthguards and check why some are better than others, in terms of fitting, reliability and protection, and many other aspects.

There are mainly two types of mouthguards, ones that provide protection for our upper teeth and gum, these are the ones we usually see and use. And there are ones that provide you complete protection, known as double protection mouthguards.

Mouthguards are a piece of protective gear that provide protection mainly to your teeth and your gums, they’re flexible and can be custom fitted. There are many kinds of mouthguards available in terms of fitting, custom made mouthguards, stock mouthguards, and also boil-and-bite mouthguards.

Stock mouthguards are generally made of rubber and are available in just one shape, making them very uncomfortable to wear. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are normally made with a thermoplastic material (EVA) and they require some molding to get the right fit, they’re easy to use and are often the ones used by grapplers. Custom ones certainly don’t come in for cheap and often require dentist assistance since the complete mold of your mouth is necessary and there’s a lot of factors like your age, gender, and even your teeth and the shape you are to take into consideration while making it, thus making it expensive but still a great choice if you want to get a mouthguard with proper fitting all the way around your mouth.

And for people who have braces or other orthodontic gear, there are companies who do make mouthguards for people with braces and such, though they might be pricey they’re definitely worth it if you want to consider BJJ and have braces. People with braces need to have a mouthguard on at all times without any exceptions.

There are also innovative mouthguards available made with an acrylic material featuring a gel filling for better protection.

Finally, what to look for in a mouthguard and the benefits

Mouthguards should be worn both during training and in competitions, even though it’s not always necessary during training apart from when you’re sparring (also known as rolling in BJJ). Since they’re usually a bit uncomfortable at first and need a bit of getting used to, it’s always a good idea to put them on even when training.

When choosing a mouthguard for yourself make sure to check if it’s properly breathable and if you can speak clearly with it on, a level of comfort that’s good for you, this is of extreme importance and necessity while associating in a contact sport such as BJJ.

You need to look out for the fitting as well, if the mouthguard isn’t covering everything in a fixed and smooth way then it’s certainly not a great choice. It needs to be tasteless and odorless and must be made from a material that doesn’t allow it to deform easily. Most importantly, it needs to stay fixed even when you’re moving about very fast and making the fastest possible movements.

There are a lot of benefits that wearing a mouthguard gives you, protection from chipped teeth, bone damage, and even root, which is why it’s a great idea to include a BJJ mouthguard during regular training as well.

A mouthguard doesn’t just protect your teeth but it also protects the soft tissues in your mouth, your lips, cheeks, and tongue against your teeth since they’re certain to cause wounds and tears when bumped into each other, which would definitely not be a good look for your mouth.

They can also be a lifesaver in the sense that they prevent direct hard and violent contact against your upper and lower jaw, which could cause serious injuries like concussions and even potential jaw fractures or bleeding inside the brain. Exactly why you should get the very best BJJ mouthguard available and consider nothing else since it’s for your safety.

To sum it up, the key features a top BJJ mouthguard has and you should look for in one are:

  • Allows you to breathe normally
  • Allows normal communication
  • Doesn’t cause gagging or choking
  • Comfort
  • Being odorless and tasteless
  • Thick and strong enough to provide protection against mild or heavy impact

There’s no real reason why you would want to have a BJJ mouthguard if it just feels like something being jammed inside your mouth and it also needs to be breathable in order for you to wear it comfortably. You need to ensure sufficient calmness of your nerves and you need to keep your breathing patterns in a line. All the more reasons as to why you need to get yourself used to wearing a mouthguard by using it even while training.

And now with all that set straight and explained, without further ado let’s dive into our selection of some of the best mouthguards available to protect you whether you just like to roll or get into fierce competitions, fear not for we have only the best ones here to guarantee your protection to a T!

Check Price on Amazon

You might not have heard about ProDefenda even if you’ve been a grappler for a while now, but in all fairness, to you, ProDefenda isn’t really a big BJJ company, at least not as much Venum or Under Armour in that matter. Even though they’re not as big, they do manage to make some mean mouthguards.

The ProDefenda Double Layered comes in a simple black and white design, it is fairly thick which means it does a good job at protecting those teeth and gums. The thing that makes ProDefenda a good contender for our list is that it doesn’t just offer protection but also allows circulation with its built-in airflow device at the back that lets air circulate freely without interruptions.

If you’re an active competitor of BJJ or to be honest any kind of combat sport, this mouthguard is definitely worth considering.

How to Mold and Adjust a BJJ mouthguard

You would of course need to take proper care of your mouthguard when you’re molding and adjusting it. This is something that sometimes professionals do wrong and in case you’re a newbie who is just starting BJJ and just don’t know how to mold and adjust your mouthguard, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!

Just follow the instructions below and you should be good to go!

Step 1

Heat up a pot of water without the lid on, after it’s boiling remove it from the heat source and it keeps down for at least 30 seconds to let it cool down a bit

Step 2

Put the rubber in the hot water pot for however long it says for your mouthguard, it is generally around 90 seconds but make sure to not exceed the indicated time.

Step 3

With the hose, carefully remove the rubber from the water and place it under cold water spill for just about a second, and put it in your mouth, quickly follow up on the next step

Step 4

Use a mirror to align the mouthguard with the centerline of your upper teeth, then place the rubber carefully on all your upper teeth while tightening at the same time using a strong suction. Use your fingers to rub the face where the tire is standing and continue for at least 20 seconds

Step 5

Remove the mouthguard from your mouth and cool it for about 30 seconds under a cold-water jet

Step 6

Re-form it again by repeating the steps above if it didn’t form well on the first tr

Step 7

After everything has been done properly you can cut excess gel, that is only if it’s necessary. Make sure if you do have to do it then do it really gradually and carefully to avoid cracking the protective gel part.

Final Words

Getting a mouthguard is easy but what matters more is the hygiene, you need to clean your mouthguard regularly, after every time after use just clean it with some soap. You can either air dry it or use a towel to dry it off and make sure to keep away the moisture from it when not in use.

If you are an active BJJ competitor then make sure to definitely use your protective gears on a regular basis and get used to it. Using protective gear won’t make you a better competitor but it will certainly make your road to be a good BJJ fighter much easier and less painful. So choose your protective gears carefully and start rolling!!

8 Best BJJ Rash Guards [2022]

nogi grappling men's competition

8 Best BJJ Rash Guards in 2021 (Guide and Reviews)

Rash Guards basically serve 2 purposes, don’t they?  First, they need to protect our skin from developing rashes and skin infections from the constant friction between skin and mats. Second, they need to look cool.

You need to buy proper gear to protect yourself from skin issues and a little bit of extra equipment will usually get the job done in making you feel like a ready fighter.

You should also be expecting to work out for a few hours at a time and all this moving around is sure to get you sweating up a storm. This may lead to some chafing which is not something that anyone would enjoy. That’s why you should invest in a rash guard that can properly get rid of any chafing

Similar to most products in the market you have a lot of options but your knowledge about rash guards may be limited. You may be unsure about the qualities you need and what you should expect for the price so to make the final decision easier for you check out the following for a complete list of BJJ rash guards.

7 Best BJJ Cups For Training & Competition [2022]

Diamond MMA - Compression Shorts with Built-in Jock Strap & Athletic Cup System

10 Best BJJ Cups You Can Buy in 2021

If you ask about that one spot you want to be off-limits and should not be hit heavily, most men will answer the groin without a second thought. The unearthing, nerve-wracking pain you feel, the pain so strong to literally shut off your senses, is a nightmare. If hit right, even the strongest of men will collapse.

As a child, I think most of us have encountered a hit to the groin from friends, be it playfully or otherwise. Thankfully, we have outgrown those times. However, for combat athletes, the possibility is still there. Sure, we have learned to manage pains and have much higher endurance and fitness, but we are still made of flesh and blood.

Luckily, we have protective gear! Use the best BJJ cups on the groin to save your precious organ from any injuries or pain!

What happens upon injuries to the groin?

The testicles and the penis are, after all, an organ. The reproductive organ may be the only organ that resides outside of the body and is wide open without protection. There is no external bone structure or even muscles that protect the testicles. So, what happens when they are hit horrendously? Well, the first thing you experience is pain, the sense numbing pain! Quickly followed by nausea and tears, you will generally bend and collapse to try and live through it. You might think you have the mental readiness to endure the pain. Still, actually, at the same time, your body is also adapting to the pain and healing the injury.

Upon impact, your brain quickly releases endorphins to control the pain. The endorphin also reduces the brain’s oxygen level. Lower oxygen means you will get a headache, and with that, feel nauseous. The tears come because the groin signals’ intense pain, ‘ which activates another neuron, the sympathetic ganglia, to console. With everything going haywire in the brain, the organ closest to it, the ear also gets confused. The ear fluid level shifts and that causes dizziness.

What should you do?

Actually, the first thing we do, laying down, is the right approach to control the pain. Before everything else, controlling the pain is always the first natural instinct, and for such cases, the right one. Hoping that only the soft sensitive tissues are hurt, leaving the testicles and fertility intact, do the following after feeling the pain.

  1. Lie down Flat: Since all the discomforts and related side effects are the brain’s results trying out activating new regions to divert the brain, the first thing you need to do is relax. Lie down flat on your back, and that will help restore the blood flow within the brain. Allow your brain to retain its previous self and bring all the conditions into place. This also helps to make sure the tissues and ligaments calm down.
  2. The tissues and affected areas might swell up, and you do not want the testicles to hang down and touch the floor as that might cause more pain. Roll up a towel and place it under the testicle to put them at ease.
  3. If the pain stays on for some time, use an ice pack around the hurt and painful area to reduce the swelling and pain.
  4. Hydrate your body. Your body has gone through a lot with the tears, sweating, and everything. It needs no saying that you need a lot of fluid right then. Drink fluids, be it plain water or any healthy drinks.
  5. You can take anti-inflammatory medicine to numb the pain, i.e., act as a painkiller. Maybe acetaminophen or ibuprofen that acts as a painkiller, temperature control, and reduces inflammation.
  6. For a more severe impact leaving the vibe of pain for days, do not forget to wear supporting underwear that keeps the scrotum in place while saving it from any extra tensions.
  7. Lookout if any blood comes out, or the severe, uncontrollable pain lasts longer than an hour. If so, immediately consult with a doctor.

There are, in fact, severe complications like testicular torsion and testicular rupture. Torsion means the organ parts getting twisted with one another, while rupture is them getting crushed.

When should you use BJJ cups?

Well, this has a straightforward answer. If you are new to the sport (also check out our beginner BJJ Gi review), or as we call it, a white belt, you might not know this yet. Still, wearing cups in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu sanctioned tournaments like IBJJF, NABJJF, etc., are illegal. That is, you can’t have extra gears or concrete parts in those parts while you are attacking your opponent.

There are actually good reasons for it. For starters, Jiu-jitsu is considered a slow-moving, gentle sport. Like cricket, football, or MMA, there is less chance of someone or something coming at your groin at incredible speed. BJJ is also a form of self-defense, and it is hoped that the fighter will be able to apply the training in real-life scenarios. Do you walk around in real life wearing a cup?

Since BJJ is not a high contact sport, there are fewer chances of attacking your scrotum than the plastic cup harms the opponent. There are many moves where you will need to put pressure by keeping the opponent between your legs. Those pieces of plastic will do more harm to the opponent than you might want. You may put them in arm injury, elbow, or even spinal column.

Besides this, having a hard plastic cup in between the legs might feel awkward. In Jiu-Jitsu, you may need to shape your body differently and bend it in various ways to fit it onto your opponent or break free from them. Having hard plastic might not allow you to be that flexible. Instead, the plastic might pinch your skin and put you out for a second or two. That second or two is enough for the opponent to take advantage and defeat you.

Wearing cups is still the right choice when you are rolling. It should be mandatory if you are rolling hard (If you don’t know, rolling is like sparring, you do with another partner in a dojo). In BJJ, the term rolling is used to indicate training, simulating scenarios with another person to try out and perfect your moves. You can roll either lightly or hard. Lightly means you ask the training partner to approach slowly, giving you time to think and execute your moves.

In contrast, hard rolling means your partner will be fully resisting and will fight just like in a tournament. Compared to tournaments, accidental injury to the scrotum is much more common in rolling. So, wearing a cup is the right choice. Also, some competitions like NAGA allow the participants to wear protective cups.

Why do you need BJJ Cups?

No matter the controversies around the use of BJJ cups, in the past you didn’t even have the option to choose one. There weren’t any suitable quality cups made for close contact sports like BJJ or MMA. There were only a handful of jockstraps on the market. Truth be told, they were very uncomfortable and even went out of place to poke and hurt the sensitive places. You can’t really blame the manufacturers for it, though.

A few years ago, using such cups was considered a weak move and an untold frowned upon rule. BJJ practitioners really didn’t give much importance to it. However, time has changed. Not everyone wants to be a competitive BJJ athlete. Instead, many of us actually learn the sport for fun, contentment, and self-defense. While doing so, we do not even imagine having such horrific injuries and experiences.

Quickly enough, Shock Doctor has become a household name. They are known for their great protective gear and coming up with innovative products for BJJ. So, it is no surprise that they make the best BJJ cups.

This is an excellent item for grapplers since it offers both the advantages of a cup and compression shorts immediately. Above all else, the shorts are manufactured, produced using a moisture-wicking material that keeps you dry and directs temperature. The shorts have an underlying pocket that houses a high-grade cup. The pocket guarantees the cup is in an ideal anatomical position, something that ordinary strap-on cups seldom ensure. Shock Doctor’s cup is a Bio-Flex vented cup giving maximal wind stream. Likewise, these shorts have a flatlock crease that keeps everything set up, and the pocket is extra strengthened.

It is the best cup for BJJ for somebody who needs an incredible modern design. The cup is preeminent with twofold layer safeguards, and it is sensibly priced.

The athletic supporter keeps the cup set. This is an extraordinary bit of preparing gear for a long training session. It is likewise comfortable and fits perfectly.

You should realize this model doesn’t offer the best security to your balls’ parallel sides. It is made of synthetic material, and you can pick between two sizes only. Nonetheless, it is useful for preparing.

For the price, you can have some amazingly excellent groin assurance that doesn’t just secure you well yet is agreeable for long practice sessions.

The Jockstrap works really hard to hold the cup in position, yet we would prescribe some compression shorts to go over it to help keep everything in place. Venum makes a fantastic minimal effort in training products, and this item is no exemption. On the off chance that you are searching for an ordinary, however all-around cup at a reasonable cost, then I propose trying this out.

The groin protector is both lightweight and extremely protective due to its Polypropylene structure. There is also a certain degree of ‘give’ to this material, which basically means that it can subtly bend. In terms of convenience, this is incredibly useful. It tends to keep the cup from becoming stiff and scratching into the flesh.

What’s more, Meister has added rubberized edges to add a degree of comfort. This, in turn, stops any discomfort or unnecessary chaffing from causing the Groin Protector.

Another factor worth noting is that it is sized to allow this cup to fit into both jock straps and cup pockets for shorts.

Best BJJ Cups Buying Guide

Type

There are basically two types of cups fit for your BJJ sessions. One is the improved strapped based one, while the other is made to fit right in place within the compression shorts. In the strap based one, the cup is tied to your waist or the legs through an elastic. The elastic has loops so that you can wear it through your legs. The cup hangs from the elastic in front of your genitalia. The compression shorts, on the other hand, are just short pants that the athletes wear. These shorts remain attached to the body and in position while allowing the wearer to move freely in any acrobatic way they want. Putting cups within the short has become a popular option, and now, the manufacturer produces and ships them both at the same time to fit perfectly. While buying, there is not a clear winner; instead, comfort is different for people. You’ll have to try and decide.

Material

The material defines how much pressure and force the cups can take without exerting it to the wearer or breaking. Modern cups can take as much as 4 tons of pressure! That is, the cup won’t break even if you hit it with a sledgehammer. Thanks to military-grade materials like spandex, polycarbonate, and thermopolymer. You should consider buying such materials if you expect such a frequent and forceful attack on the groin region. If you plan to use cups only for BJJ, then a more straightforward synthetic cup is enough.

Size

You bet not everyone has the same size of genitalia. So, when it comes to the cup, would a single size suffice for all? Not really. The cup should be such that it shouldn’t feel tight against your testicles, nor shouldn’t it be too loose to not even hold them in place. Thankfully, almost all significant producers offer a variety of sizes. Most offer at least two to three, while some offer as many as 8 sizes!

Price

Just like the different materials, there are other price points to these cups. Better quality means more prices. You should really understand what quality you are looking for and then set your budget according to the cost to quality ratio. If you have long term plans, why not go for the best of quality?

Ease

Remember how there were complaints of severe injuries, especially after wearing a cup? It was because the athletes wore it wrong. After wearing it, move around, lie down and move on the ground to check if the cup remains in place. Also, do not forget, the cup should be light and not give you an extra burden.

Sideway Protection

Tissues in the groin region are susceptible, and you do not want your cup to poke the genitalia or pinch it. There is also the risk of sideway kick or punch while in combat. So, while buying, make sure the cup is broad enough to protect all around from hurts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Do Groin Protectors Last?

This depends on a few things: the groin protector’s consistency, how much you practice, and the amount of training you do. That said, the chances are that the cup will last for years, as it is unlikely that you will be hit regularly in that region.

Will we wash them?

Yes, it is possible to wash most MMA groin protectors and you definitely should wash them, as you would any clothes. Only make sure that when the cup arrives, you inspect the packaging. Hand wash the cup in hot/hot water if you can’t see any details on cleaning.

Do you need more than one?

No, odds are, you’re not going to require more than a cup. If you’re playing, the only time that I would consider getting more than one is. It might be a smart idea to have a tournament cup and a cup exclusively for preparation.

That being said, I would definitely be having double the same model cup. This way, the cup will not feel any different from usual when you’re competing and will not distract you.

How do I wear a cup?

In your compression pants/ shorts, you can either bring the cup through a slit, or you can get a jockstrap to put the cup in. Personally, I prefer to use the form of compression briefs, but it’s merely down to choice.

Conclusion

Using protective cups in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a hot topic itself. People have different opinions about them, and looking at the competitions, we see no way of changing the rules. However, for regular people like us, the protection of our parts is up to us. You just need to find out which guard gives you the most comfort. Read through these best BJJ cups, and find it!

How to wash your BJJ Gi for the First Time [2022]

bjj gi washing for the first time

How To Wash Your BJJ Gi For The First Time – A Beginner’s Guide for 2021

Since you’re going to practice for a long time wearing the clothes, you’ll need to wash them regularly almost after each training session. Moreover, if you want to maintain hygiene and don’t want your training clothes to stink, then I’d recommend you better wash them before your next practice. However, you should be careful about washing your Gi for the very first time because the first wash is more crucial than the later ones to sustain the quality of the fabric. And washing your Gi without knowing the must-do things can ruin the dress and leave it unusable. So, here are some steps to follow while washing your BJJ Gi for the very first time.

Jump to Section

Steps of washing your Gi for the first time

  • Before washing your new Gi, have a look at the instructions specified by the brand which produced it. The instructions, in general, are given as washing or laundry symbols and labels on clothes. All brands don’t have the same production procedure or use the same raw materials. So, washing methods and instructions will vary too. Remember and consider every direction carefully.
  • The very first step to follow is turning your Gi’s inside out. This is necessary to do to protect the color, stitch, and fabric. Especially when your Gi is not white but blue or black, if you still choose to wash it without turning it inside-out, then the color will fade very soon. Not only the color but the stitch and shape can also be affected after drying. If you want to wash it more carefully, you can wash every piece separately.
  • The next essential thing to remember is that you should use cold water for washing your BJJ Gi, as too much warm water will damage the fabric. Use cold water and low or medium spin in the machine.

If you’re planning to shrink the fabric, then you can use a little bit of warm water. But shrinking for the very first time is not needed. If your cloth doesn’t fit well even after the first wash, then you can go for shrinking. To shrink, you need to set your washing machine at a moderate warm mode, low spin, and moderate temperature at the dryer. It will be advised not to shrink for the very first time. Air drying is more effective rather than drying through a dryer.

  • Do not use chlorine/bleach to wash the Gi. Chlorine directly engages with the inner material of the Gi as it’s highly oxidizing. It chemically reacts with the materials, which eventually affects the texture of the material and shortens its durability too. So, if you want your Gi to be long-lasting, avoid chlorine, bleach, and other strong oxidizers.
  • Air drying is good for the first time you wash, but be sure that your Gi doesn’t come in direct contact with the sunlight because the UV rays will reduce the integrity of the fabric and will decrease the ultimate quality of it. Moreover, it won’t last long. So, it’s good to hang it indoors for drying or where direct sunlight doesn’t enter.
  • Another small piece of advice that can be given is not to wash the Gi with other clothes, especially while cleaning for the first time. Because it’s not made like other cotton clothes which we use, so the cleaning method is quite different. Also, there’s a risk of the color getting ruined, as color from other clothes can discharge and get mixed with the Gi.
  • You can use vinegar in the first wash in two cases. One, if your Gi stinks and the other is if your Gi brand permits you to use a vinegar solution. A vinegar solution is known for moving out any sort of bad smell. So, if you experience any unwanted odor in your Gi, you can use the vinegar solution in the recommended proportion. Remember, not every brand-made Gi can tolerate vinegar. So, ensure before using it.

Why is the first wash so important?

After reading the main purpose of the article, the first question that might come to your mind is why the first wash is given so much priority, isn’t it? The first wash can be compared to preparing the dress for the upcoming pros and cons it’s going to face. Moreover, it encounters the water and cleaning agents for the first time after the manufacturing stage. So, during the first wash, you need to be more careful and handle it more delicately than the later washes. The next washes are important too. But the risk of damage is more in the first wash. One small mistake can fade the color, damage the fabric, or damage the stitches as well. So, the first wash is very important to be taken care of.

How will you clean the stains?

If you somehow get stains on your Gi before the first wash or even afterward, what should you do? You should wash it immediately with cold water. If you delay or use hot water to clean the stains, it will set permanently on your Gi.

What if you have a colored Gi?

Protecting the color of Gi is vital for long durability. You should be more careful if your Gi is dark-colored (blue and black). For dark colors, you must use appropriate detergents, that damages the colors and fabrics less. Using vinegar in a small proportion is also an effective way to protect the colors. White Gis, too, can be washed using vinegar and lukewarm water.

Users have shared their experiences regarding this. And they recommend using vinegar, Borax, or Oxyclean for cleaning helps. We have a full review on detergents for BJJ Gis as well.

Should you wash your belt?

Some people prefer not to wash their belts because they think it’s not necessary; also, there’s a chance it might get damaged while cleaning. But it’s also a part of Gi, and it needs to be cleaned as well, maybe not regularly. It’s just that the belt must be cleaned according to its materials. If the belt is made of cotton, then there is no problem with washing it.

What to do after the first wash?

Is washing properly the only thing that makes a Gi long-lasting? No, only washing is not enough to take care of it; it’s just a step of care. So the things you can do is:

  1. Use a fan to dry it faster, and it’s good to dry it in the air as soon as possible.
  2. Don’t wrap your wet Gis and keep them in your training bag. This can damage the fiber, lead to growing microorganisms, and create an unwanted foul smell too.
  3. Using an iron is not always necessary. But if you want, you can iron it at a low temperature. But make sure not to run the iron on the logo, also avoid the patches and embroidery.
  4. Wrap it properly before storing it anywhere.
  5. Don’t use a single Gi exhaustively; it creates pressure on the fiber, stitches, and patches. As a result, it tears within a short time. So you must keep multiple sets of Gis
  6. The last thing you should follow is not to lend your Gis to others because everyone doesn’t have the same body shape, and it’s not hygenic either. Additionally, others won’t take care of your belongings the same way you would.

Some more tips

  • Buy your Gis from a renowned brand.
  • Follow the shape chart and buy according to your body shape.
  • Choose a high-quality fabric because its washing and caring methods should be easier.
  • Use a fragranced washing powder while washing to remove any kind of odor.
  • Buy a new Gi if your Gis tear, get discolored or have got any stain you cannot remove, or if the Gi doesn’t fit well after multiple washes.

Bottom Line

The points above are the main essentials related to the first wash of your Gis. Washing it for the first time is not too hard; you just need to be careful with it. Buy from the brand you prefer; you can choose a color according to your preference. All you need to do is follow the rules of washing and caring according to the color, shape, and fabric so that you can use your Gi for a long time. Buy a perfect Gi, maintain it properly, that can show up your personality.

How long does a BJJ Gi last? [2022]

bjj gi long lasting

How long does a BJJ Gi last? All you need to know in 2021

The BJJ Gi is the uniform for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you want to know how to maintain your BJJ Gi for a long time, then you’re at the right place.

One effective way to make sure your Gi lasts for an extended time is to shop for a high-quality, more massive Gi with thinner fabrics. The lifetime of your also Gi depends on your maintenance and care. Most of the Gis’ lifetime is two years, but it can be extended to a few years more if you keep it more carefully. To make your Gi more longer lasting and durable, you have to take care of it through proper washing, storing, and other general maintenance.

Jump to Section

Durability depending on the type of fabric

Single weave fabrics: If you’re planning to practise Jiu-Jitsu for at least a year, then you can purchase a Gi, which has a single-weave fabric. It should be light, smooth, and straightforward. Its durability is not more than a year, even if you take care of it properly. And there’s no guarantee of getting expected service. All of these kinds of fabric are fragile, thin, and not very durable, making them less expensive.

Double weave fabrics: Sometimes, it’s called a double cloth because if we touch it, then we can see two separate sets of interconnected warp and weft or filling yarns are forming a two-layered fabric. Double weave is best thought of as a process because of its weaving process, which, in some sense, is ‘two times’ as regular weaving. Two separate sets of weaving make cloths more strong, resistant, and durable. Its durability is better than a single weave. Anyone can use it for two years without any hesitation.

Pearl weave fabrics: As the name suggests, it has the presence of multiple rows of pearl liked shapes aligned together. When two sets of weft, a looser and broader weft, and a thinner and tighter weft are woven in an alternate order, the looser weft creates the appearance of raised pearl-looking bumps. Pearl weaves are the most popular and comfortable fabrics used for Gi jackets because of their higher durability and mid-light weight.

Golden weave fabrics: It has a distinct ladder-like appearance. The golden weave is created when wider and heavier warp threads are interspersed between the regular threads, and the looser weft is woven over and under a whole part of the thinner warp threads. Therefore, it implies that its durability, resistance, and safeguard is much higher than any fabrics for Gi. Its lifetime can be a decade. Technically, pearl weave and golden weave are also single weave fabrics with a difference in weaving style.

Take care of your Gi properly

Washing: Since Gi must be washed so often, it is a significant factor in caring for your Gi. You have to wash in cold or warm water and air dry (outside). Bleach is considered a bad idea as it weakens the fibers. The tissues then become more prone to tearing, and it shortens the life of the Gi. Washing by turning the cloth inside and out is crucial to preserve any patches. Hot water will damage your Gi, and so, it should be avoided. You must purchase a Gi that was sized larger for you and then used a warm water wash and take a single day for drying it. Outdoor air drying is preferable. Be careful when you wash a white Gi if there are any other colored cloths in the washing machine.

Drying: Your biggest mistake can be if you have forgotten your wet Gi in your bag after class and left it overnight. You will understand the importance of drying in the next morning. The black, moist environment of the Gi sitting in your bag leads to bacterial growth. It’s enough to establish bacteria over a single night. It can even spread a permanent bad smell in your Gi, which is quite disgusting and unhealthy. A better way of drying your Gi would be if you submerge it in warm water and wash it properly. For drying, it’s best if you can keep it outside, hanging in the rope. Fresh air helps to reduce any foul odor and lets it dry quicker. Don’t try to dry it in a single enclosed room, which has little or no airflow.

Tidy up: Basically, Gi is a heavy dress, and technique of tidying can affect your Gi. If the fabric is folded too much, it can cause permanent creases. The convenient way is to hang it on a hanger.

Dealing with odors: The stench from your Gi can cause an embarrassing experience. So, you need to know how to eliminate it naturally. Mixing up vinegar with water to wash the Gi can be the right solution for the funky smell. You can fill a pail with water, pour 1/2 a small bottle of white vinegar in the water, and leave the Gi soaking overnight. Later, you can wash it, usually in the washing machine, which will restore your Gi from the funky smell.

In Conclusion

How long a BJJ Gi last depends on many factors and can’t be answered per se. However, as we’ve seen above there are several factors which may influence how long your Gi will last. To make sure your Gis lifetime is extended as much as possible, follow a proper maintenance routine and it’ll be with you for years to come.!
